International Artist's Book Festival
"Wandering" 2003-2005

We invite for the exhibition of artists books exploiting wandering as the main motif.

Book Art (formerly Polish Book Art) is a cultural project of ten years long tradition. It is the only presentation of achievements, trends and problems of artist's book and book illustration in Poland.

Last year edition (VII) expanded into a quite big book festival with the honorary patronage of the Minister of Culture.

The festival will last till the end of 2005 since the exhibition has been wandering all around Poland.

The Festival was inaugurated in Warsaw in May 2003. Its main event was the international exhibition of artists books - "Wandering".

Wandering is not only the main topic of exhibited items - it is also a real wandering around art galleries, libraries and museums. A vast interanational dialogue of artists and culture venues.

Among the participants there are artists entirely devoted to books as well as the ones who have been quite successful in other arts. What unites them is the idea of artist's book with its extreme richness of styles and varieties. They make books where all their elements (texts, pictures, covers, paper, etc.) are strongly integrated and almost inseperable; sometimes their book-objects remind more a sculpture, a 3D construction, than a real book.

Na wystawie prezentujemy książki eksperymentalne, liberaturę, unikaty, obiekty, wydawnictwa autorskie, bibliofilskie - ok. 106 twórców (ponad 80 w 2004 r.) zaproszonych oraz wybranych przez jury z kraju i zagranicy, z Bułgarii, Brazylii, Czech, Francji, Holandii, Hiszpanii, Irlandii, Kanady, Mołdawii, Niemiec, Polski, Słowacji, USA i Anglii.

Let us then begin a journey into real and spiritual worlds woven from various personal memories and thoughts. A trip through light and dark sides of our life. A travel do distant lands and cultures. This exhibition is like a huge antology composed of author's texts, quotations, excerpts both from modern and classical literature.

Works of the artists taking part in our exhibition can be found in the most prestigious libraries, museums and collections all over the world.

A special education programme is being held during the festival: children's jury, workshops, lectures, meetings and discussions with artists, literary and art critics and theoreticians.

There is a catalogue of the exhibition (both on paper and on CD) with texts in Polish and English, containing reproductions, technical descritions, artist's commentaries, essays, CVs and pictures of the participants. Catalogues and postcards from the former editions of Book Art are also available.
